A Blessing to Children in Need

Imagine...Children with no books, paper or pencils...no electricity to do homework at night! Classrooms with no ceiling or windows. Children who are eager to learn...without the basics needed.

According to UNAIDs, an estimated 25.3 million Africans were living with HIV/AIDs in 2000. That's more than 70 percent of the worldwide total. Many children have become orphans and face daily struggles with food, clothing and schooling.

Literacy is an important key to the cure. Empowering youth is a powerful antidote.

Our friends in Makobe, Kenya are in great need of books and school supplies. Members and friends of WPC are starting a library for children grades 1-8 and high school.

Here is your opportunity to change a life, many lives. Baraka means "Blessing". Would you like to be a blessing to children in need?

Our goal is to have the first phase of the Baraka Library in place by the Fall, 2004.

BARAKA LIBRARY DREAM COMES TRUE

With great anticipation, we have waited for the arrival of the library books and school supplies to the orphan children of Makobe. As of October 1st (5 months later), we received the following news:

October 1, 2004

Greetings from Makobe! I am very pleased and excited to let you know that 24 parcels* have arrived in Makobe for Makobe Primary School. I have just arrived from Makobe and I have seen the books. They are wonderful books.

Blessings and love to all,

Josephine Sesi

*24 parcels is equivalent to approximately 2500 books; 1000 books are still in transit!

This summer when Moses Pulei visited the school, he took some of the supplies that had been put together for the children. He could see the sparkle in their eyes.

Mr. Wambua, the Headmaster of the school with teary eyes said: "we have been using 3 protractors for all 170 students. We have not had Mathematics text books nor teachers workbooks for any science classes. This is an answer to prayer." The sense of gratitude was expressed by all teachers and the students that Moses talked to.

The Baraka Library has made a big difference to a small school where just two years ago the government was contemplating closing because they did not have any hope for its future. HIV aids has killed a large number of the adults. Most children in the community of Makobe do not have one or both parents.

Our efforts to build a library have given hope to a whole generation in Makobe. This work has made a difference and Moses is convinced that one day a child from Makobe will say: "someone from WPC helped our school and that is why I got an education."

Together, we are changing lives. Thank you for your enthusiastic support of this meaningful project.

A community that cares

Books and supplies were received from : Westminster Presbyterian, Oaks Christian Middle School, Las Virgines School District, St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School, Colina Middle School, Amgen and friends throughout the community.

Baraka means "Blessing" and you have been to children whose lives will be changed. Sincere thanks for your generosity.
