Questions for Reflection - Profiles in Learning "Adam: The Problem with Freedom"

Genesis 2:8–17

  1. In Hebrew the name "Adam" means "humankind". The word "Adamah" means "clay". What "grounds" you?
  2. "Eden" means "Garden of God". Does it surprise you that Adam has work to do there? Does work just have to be "for money"? What work do you, or can you do to help make this a more "productive" place? How about tending a garden?
  3. Why is "freedom" such a serious problem? How does it get interpreted? How does anyone decide who is right?
  4. Why does God set a limit on Adam? What is the danger?
  5. How do you face this danger every day?
  6. How do you experience "freedom" within the constraints of personal relationships? (Think about being a parent, married, a member of a church, etc.)
  7. Read John 8:31–36. How can we have any hope of being "free"?
  8. What is Jesus offering us at the Lord's Table? How does this relate to God's warning to Adam?
