Questions for Reflection - "How to Know What to Live For"
Luke 19:28–40; Luke 9:18–27
- Can you think of an example of a time when someone who cared about you told you the truth at a turning point in your life? What was that like to hear? How did you respond then?
- Read the passage. This likely takes place at a turning point in Jesus' ministry, beginning now to head "south" to Jerusalem. What role does prayer seem to play?
- Why does Jesus ask these two questions? What expectations does he surface with these questions? What kinds of expectations do you have as a follower of Christ?
- Talk about Peter's answer? Is he "correct"? Are we when we use similar words? Why does Jesus order them to silence?
- What are the spiritual principles embedded in Jesus' explanation of the meaning of the words Peter has just used? (Look at vv. 23-26).
- What does "self-denial" mean? How is this different than "self-rejection"?
- What is the difference between "thorns" and the "cross"?
- Why does Jesus need to talk about shame and embarrassment? How do you think this is overcome?
- Talk about how you approach Holy Week. How does Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter help you know what to live for?
