“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Jesus came into the world, changed it forever, and ascended into heaven. But he made his disciples a promise; that he would be with them, always. By directing them to teach and make disciples of all nations, he extends that promise to all that believe in Him as the Way to the Father.
In one way, this is very easy to understand. We all have had a mentor, teacher, or coach whose voice is in our ear as we face a new challenge or take a new risk. My mother, God rest her soul, is with me often, reminding me of lessons she taught me about relationships and patience and grace. But that is because I carry in my heart and mind the memory of my mother. I can still see her face and hear her voice.
Maybe the promise of Jesus is a little harder to “feel” because our relationship begins as one that is shared through many generations instead of the direct relationship experienced by His original disciples. But think about this:
When we at church elect new Elders and Deacons, part of the ceremony is “the laying of hands” where everyone who has come before as a pastor, elder, or deacon huddles around the newcomers and simply places their hands upon them. Each time we do this, I visualize backward through time, generation by generation, to Jesus personally laying His hands in blessing, to carry on throughout time.
Jesus is the Truth and He promised us,
In success and in failure
In the storm and in the calm
In joy and in sorrow
Awake and asleep
In hope and despair
When you are full of yourself
When you lose yourself
When you are all alone
When you are surrounded
When you show up and when you don’t
When you are right
When you are wrong
When you are kind
When you are mean
He is with us always, to the very end of the age.
