“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
“Song of the Heavenly Host"
It’s dark, cold, and routine …
Watch the sheep, keep the herd together
Same schedule as last night, last month, last year,
Occasionally there might be travelers
Heading toward Bethlehem for the census
Something small to break the routine.
He remembered the couple a few hours ago
Even as she rode the donkey, he could tell
She was expecting a child any day.
What a terrible time for the census decree
But at least her husband tenderly encouraged
Her saying it was only a few miles more.
More shepherds arrived with their flocks
And the young pregnant woman forgotten
as sheep were tended and cold meats eaten.
Just another night… When suddenly
The brightest light appeared not just
in the sky but all around them, and
crazy as it seemed, an angel appeared
a REAL ANGEL telling them to “fear not”
for he was bringing them good news that
would be a great joy to all people.
Why them? They were Just shepherds.
More angels arrived. A heavenly host! Maybe thousands,
And all Praising God and saying: Give glory to God in Heaven
and on Earth, let there be peace among the people who please God.”
And, all of this was happening in nearby Bethlehem.
With an event like that happening so close, the shepherds
headed to Bethlehem and following directions,
found Mary and Joseph tending baby Jesus.
Sharing the angels’ visit with Mary and Joseph
and with others they met,
These shepherds returned to their work
Continually, praising God for all they had seen and heard.
As these shepherds spread the word about that night,
let us also share our experiences with
our Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)
at Christmas, the celebration of Jesus’ birth
and throughout the days,
months, and years that follow. Amen
